Purple Bird – Who Says a Children’s Room Has to Be Bright?
Let’s be honest for a moment…
When you search for nursery inspiration, you quickly get the impression that there are only two acceptable colours: white… and slightly whiter white.
Perhaps a tiny beige rainbow if we’re feeling adventurous.
But who decided that?
Children don’t dream in beige.
They dream about secret gardens, talking birds, hidden castles, enchanted forests and magical places where anything can happen.
So why shouldn’t their room feel like one of those places?
That thought stayed with me while I was designing Purple Bird.
Instead of creating another pale nursery, I imagined something completely different. A cosy bedroom tucked away inside an old Scottish castle. Thick stone walls, soft lamplight, shelves filled with storybooks and a window where you can hear the rain tapping gently outside.
Not spooky.
Magical.
A room where every flower might hide a tiny story and every bird feels like it has flown straight out of a fairytale.
Because here’s something I think we sometimes forget…
Dark colours don’t automatically create dark feelings.
Warm lighting, natural wood, soft blankets, woven baskets and rich colours can create one of the cosiest spaces imaginable. In many ways, darker rooms can even feel more comforting—like being wrapped in your favourite blanket at the end of the day.
And children have extraordinary imaginations.
Give them a room filled with stories instead of empty walls, and they’ll often invent adventures all on their own.
Perhaps those purple birds become friendly messengers.
Perhaps the flowers are part of a secret garden.
Perhaps bedtime suddenly feels like the beginning of an adventure instead of the end of the day.
I don’t believe every nursery has to follow the same Scandinavian rulebook.
If your heart is drawn to deeper colours, vintage furniture, soft lighting and a little bit of everyday magic…
Trust it.
Children don’t need rooms that look like a catalogue.
They need rooms that invite them to dream.
And if that dream happens to begin inside a little room that feels as though it belongs in a magical Scottish castle…
Well…
I think that’s rather wonderful.
