Upholstery Guide: Refreshing Furniture with Fabric

Giving new life to an old piece of furniture is one of the most rewarding DIY projects. Whether it’s a vintage armchair, a small stool, or a simple bench, upholstery is a beautiful way to add personality and warmth to your home.

For my upholstery fabrics, I use Belgian linen — a natural, durable material with a soft, relaxed feel. It works especially well for chairs, benches, cushions, and other lighter-use pieces.

Why Belgian linen?

Belgian linen is loved for its natural texture and timeless character. It softens over time and gives furniture a warm, lived-in look. It’s breathable, strong, and perfect for creating a calm, cozy atmosphere.

What you’ll need

  • Fabric scissors
  • Staple gun and staples
  • Measuring tape
  • Screwdriver
  • Pencil or chalk

(You don’t need everything — just the basics to get started.)

The basics

Start by removing the old fabric carefully. Taking a few photos along the way can help when putting everything back together.

Check the padding and replace it if needed. Then measure your fabric and leave a bit of extra room around the edges.

When attaching the fabric, begin in the center and work your way outwards, pulling it gently to keep it smooth. Take your time with the corners — neat folds make all the difference.

Finish by trimming any excess fabric underneath.

A few simple tips

Start with a smaller piece if you’re new to upholstery.
Order a sample before starting a bigger project.
Work slowly and adjust as you go.

Final thoughts

Upholstery is a simple way to transform a piece of furniture and make it your own. With a natural fabric like Belgian linen, even the smallest project can feel special.

Start small, take your time — and enjoy the process
